Bathroom Painting in Derby

Moisture resistant finishes for the room that takes the most punishment in your house.

Your bathroom is quietly destroying every paint job you throw at it

Here is something I have learned from doing bathroom painting in Derby for years. That room is where every shortcut comes back to haunt you. All that steam, all that condensation, moisture sitting on surfaces every single day. It is relentless. If someone has gone in with standard emulsion from the bargain bin, give it six months. The ceiling starts bubbling, the walls start flaking, and that patch behind the sink goes green. I see it all the time and it is always the same story.

Most people do not think of their bathroom as a specialist job. They reckon paint is paint. But being a bathroom decorator has taught me it is a completely different game. The products matter. The prep matters. Getting moisture resistant stuff with anti-mould properties on there properly is the difference between something that lasts years and something that falls apart before Christmas. You would not believe how many bathrooms I have walked into across Derby where the paint is already peeling and they only had it done last year.

At Connolly Coatings we handle bathroom painting in Derby and right across Derbyshire. Every job starts the same way. Strip back what is failing, treat anything that needs treating, and build it up again with products that are actually designed for wet rooms. A proper bathroom makeover in Derby does not need new tiles and a fancy new suite. Sometimes it just needs the right painter who knows what they are doing in a room that fights back. That is us.

The right paint changes everything in a bathroom

Standard emulsion has no business being in a bathroom. I will say it as many times as it needs saying. That tin of white matt you picked up from B&Q for the bedroom? It will bubble and peel within months on a bathroom ceiling. Bathroom paint is a different product entirely. It is formulated to resist moisture, to breathe, and to stop mould getting a foothold.

We use specialist bathroom paints from brands that actually know what they are doing. Products with anti-mould and anti-bacterial properties baked in. Finishes that can handle being wiped down regularly. And we apply them over properly prepared surfaces so they bond and last. It is not glamorous work talking about paint chemistry but it is the difference between a bathroom that stays looking fresh and one that starts falling apart.

Tiles, ceilings, and the bits nobody wants to deal with

Did you know you can paint bathroom tiles? Most people assume retiling is the only option when they are sick of those 1990s peach ceramics around the bath. But with the right primer and the right tile paint, we can completely change the colour and bring those tiles into this decade. It costs a fraction of retiling and the results are genuinely impressive.

Then there are bathroom ceilings. The most abused surface in the room. They take the full force of every shower, every bath, every time someone forgets to turn the extractor fan on. A bathroom ceiling needs more attention than any other ceiling in the house. We treat any existing mould, prime the surface properly, and use a ceiling paint that can handle humidity day after day after day. It is the kind of boring detail that means you are not back on the phone to us in twelve months.

Questions about bathroom painting

What paint is best for bathrooms?

You need a paint specifically designed for wet environments. We use moisture resistant bathroom paint with anti-mould properties. Brands like Dulux, Zinsser, and Tikkurila all make specialist bathroom ranges and we pick the best one for the job depending on the surface and the conditions. The one thing we never do is use standard emulsion. It just does not hold up in a bathroom. Simple as that.

Can you paint bathroom tiles?

Yes and we do it regularly. The key is preparation. The tiles get cleaned thoroughly to remove any soap residue and grime. Then we sand them to create a key for the primer. A specialist bonding primer goes on first, followed by multiple coats of tile paint. The result is a completely different looking bathroom without the dust, mess, and expense of ripping tiles off the wall. It is not suitable for floor tiles that get heavy foot traffic, but wall tiles around baths and showers? Brilliant results.

How do you prevent mould when painting a bathroom?

First thing is we deal with any existing mould. We treat it with a proper fungicidal wash, not just paint over it. Painting over mould is like putting a plaster on a broken arm. It does nothing. Once the mould is treated and the surface is clean, we use paint with anti-mould agents built into the formula. Good ventilation helps too. If your extractor fan is not pulling its weight, sorting that out alongside a fresh paint job makes a massive difference.

How long does bathroom paint last?

With the right products and proper prep, you are looking at five to eight years easily. Maybe longer if the bathroom is well ventilated. Compare that to standard emulsion which can start peeling in as little as six to twelve months in a steamy bathroom. The upfront cost of using proper bathroom paint is a bit more but spread it over the years it lasts and it is significantly cheaper than repainting every year or two.

“Our bathroom had been painted by the previous owners and it was peeling everywhere. Kade came in, stripped it back, treated the mould on the ceiling, and repainted the whole thing with proper bathroom paint. Six months on and it still looks brand new. Should have called them sooner.”
